My Metal Beginnings
My love for metal started with a song that is not metal at all. Prior to metal, I was a fan of rock and J-pop (which is still my guilty pleasure). Anyways, Never Ending Story byWithin Temptation had been chosen as a theme song for a website that I frequently visited. Upon further “investigation” I discovered Ice Queen and Mother Earth as well. Like a week later we were chatting in IRC about them and I commented on Sharon’s beautiful voice. My friend Kworb had no problem boasting he was a bigger fan of Tarja’s voice, the singer of Nightwish.
He had sent over some songs (Know Why the Nightingale Sings, Elvenpath, Stargazers, and Passion And The Opera are the ones I remember) and I immediately fell in love. The uniqueness of Tarja’s voice contrasting the symphonic metal hooked me. Luck so has it that when I went to the local record shop, they had a fresh copy of Wishmaster in the metal section with a import tag on it. Needless to say, I snagged it up and played it over and over.
From there, I branched out to their friends Sonata Arctica and both of their influences Stratovarius. I started to branch out after that, finding new bands to listen to who were connected to other bands I listened too. Quiz me sometime, we can play Six Degrees of Nightwish :D
